How a Septic System Works
Wastewater from household fixtures flows into an underground septic tank, where it is held for several days. Solids separate naturally: heavier particles settle as sludge at the bottom, while lighter materials form a scum layer on top. Beneficial bacteria break down organic matter, leaving clearer liquid (effluent) in the middle.
Over time, accumulated solids require professional pumping—typically every 3–5 years depending on usage—to prevent backups and maintain efficiency.
The clarified effluent then flows to the drain field for natural filtration and dispersal into the soil.
