How a Septic System Works
Wastewater from sinks, showers, bathtubs, toilets, and other household fixtures flows into an underground septic tank. Inside the tank, the wastewater is held for several days, giving solid particles time to separate naturally.
Heavier solids settle to the bottom, forming a layer of sludge, while lighter materials (such as grease and oils) float to the top, creating a scum layer. In the middle, clearer liquid (effluent) remains.
Beneficial bacteria naturally present in the tank help break down organic matter in both the sludge and scum layers. Over time, however, these solids accumulate and cannot be fully eliminated by bacterial action alone. To prevent system backups and maintain proper function, the tank must be professionally pumped and cleaned—typically every 3–5 years, depending on household size and usage.

After solids settle in the septic tank, the clarified liquid (effluent) flows by gravity into the drain field (also called leach field or distribution field)
